Under 49 CFR § 1540.109, it’s illegal to interfere with, assault, threaten, or intimidate TSA screening personnel while they’re doing their job. This applies at the checkpoint, during a pat-down, or at baggage screening.

More Than a Warning

This isn’t just a warning and a wave-through. TSA can pursue civil penalties ranging from $2,570 up to $17,062 per violation, and penalties climb toward the top of that range if the interference involves an assault. Depending on what was said or done, criminal charges can follow too, including disorderly conduct, assault, or even federal charges for bomb-related “jokes” or threats.

A stressed comment about what’s in your bag. A shove past a screening line. Losing your temper with an agent. Any of these can escalate into a TSA checkpoint interference charge fast, and TSA does not have a sense of humor about security.
