Reviewed by Michael P. Maddux, Esq. | Board Certified Criminal Trial Lawyer | Florida Super Lawyer for 16 Consecutive Years

Florida license plate covers can lead to serious charges, even when the obstruction seems minimal or unintentional. Any license plate cover or frame that obscures, alters, or interferes with the visibility of a plate number or registration decal can justify a lawful traffic stop. For instance, tinted covers, clear plastic shields, reflective sprays, and decorative or oversized frames are all common violations.

Why This Is No Longer a Minor Issue

Officers no longer treat these as simple “fix-it” issues. In fact, knowingly obscuring a license plate can rise to a criminal offense, and officers may initiate a stop based solely on the plate’s visibility. As a result, what begins as a minor plate issue often becomes the gateway to DUI, drug, firearm, or probation-related charges.

Why the Legality of the Stop Matters

Because these cases frequently hinge on whether the stop itself was lawful, the license plate issue becomes a critical defense question. For this reason, the safest option for drivers is simple: use no plate cover and no frame at all. If you are stopped for a license plate-related violation, having a criminal defense attorney review the legality of that stop can make all the difference.
