Florida’s new license plate law, which took effect on October 1, 2025, significantly strengthens penalties for altering or obscuring license plates. Under this law, drivers who cover, modify, or tamper with their plates using sprays, tinted covers, wraps, or any device that makes the plate difficult to read can now face criminal charges.

What was once treated as a minor traffic infraction is now classified as a second-degree misdemeanor. Even more serious, if a license plate is altered or obscured while committing a crime or fleeing from law enforcement, the charge can escalate to a third-degree felony, carrying substantial penalties including potential jail or prison time.

The law also targets suppliers, making it a first-degree misdemeanor to manufacture, sell, or distribute devices designed to hide or alter license plates. These changes reflect Florida’s effort to curb evasive driving tactics and strengthen law enforcement’s ability to identify vehicles involved in criminal activity.
