What Counts as School Zone Speeding Under Florida Law
Under Florida Statute § 316.1895, signage marks school zones and often flashing beacons. These reduce the speed limit, typically to 20 mph, during designated hours when children are arriving, departing, or otherwise present.
Florida Statute § 318.18(3) doubles the fine for any speeding violation committed within an active, properly marked school zone or crossing. A ticket that might otherwise cost a modest amount can climb significantly higher once the school zone penalty applies.
Beyond the increased fine, a school zone speeding citation still adds the standard points to your driver’s license. The number of points depends on how many miles per hour over the limit you were driving.. If an officer deems the driving reckless or careless rather than simple speeding, additional charges under Florida’s careless driving statute could follow.
