Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 757 into law on May 15, 2026, expanding Florida’s school safety measures to include public colleges and universities statewide.

The legislation broadens participation in the Guardian Program — originally established after the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy — allowing trained personnel at public postsecondary institutions to serve as armed guardians on campus.

In addition, HB 757 creates a second-degree felony for discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school. The law also requires colleges and universities to implement active assailant response plans, establish threat management teams, and develop family reunification procedures for emergencies.
