Many accident victims want to know how long it will take to resolve their case after a crash. The timeline can vary depending on several factors, including the severity of injuries, the length of medical treatment, and whether the insurance company disputes the claim.

For example, after being injured in a car accident, Maria decided to pursue compensation for her medical bills and lost wages. Her attorney began by gathering medical records, police reports, and witness statements while Maria continued medical treatment so the full extent of her injuries could be understood. This initial investigation phase took several months.

Once the claim was submitted to the insurance company, negotiations began. However, because the insurer disputed the severity of Maria’s injuries, the case eventually moved into litigation. Over the following year, both sides exchanged evidence and conducted depositions during the discovery phase.

Shortly before the scheduled trial—about 18 months after the accident—the parties reached a settlement. This example shows how an auto accident case may take anywhere from a few months to more than a year depending on treatment, investigation, negotiations, and whether a lawsuit becomes necessary.
